The Sunset Ink is an independent long-form publication built for readers who would rather take their time. No clickbait, no manufactured outrage, no infinite-scroll hijack - just essays worth the room they ask for.

Why this exists

It exists because the open web has been overrun by writing that rewards attention more than it earns it. Vague titles, manufactured stakes, headlines that promise far more than the body delivers - even publications that used to be trustworthy have drifted in that direction. The Sunset Ink is a quiet pushback: a place where a writer is given the time to think and a reader is trusted to slow down.

What we publish

We publish essays on people, place, culture, living, work & tech, and sport & play. The breadth is deliberate - the only common thread is that each piece earns its length. Articles are written by invited authors who have agreed to our editorial voice and standards; readers can save what they want to return to, organise their library into reading groups, and follow the writers whose work they trust.

Who runs it

The Sunset Ink is built and maintained by one person, with no investors, no algorithmic targets, and no plans for growth at the cost of quality. The aim is not to be everywhere - it is to stay honest as it grows.

The team

Drop us a line, or leave feedback on what is working and what is not. The Sunset Ink is a small team, so replies are not instant - but every message is read.

Replies usually take 1-2 weeks

The Sunset Ink is run by one person, so response times vary with submission volume. Every message is read, even if I cannot reply individually.

Please confirm you have read the Privacy Policy.

A short list of the questions we get most often. If yours is not here, write to us via the Contact tab.

Reading & library

Do I need an account to read articles?

No. Every article and column on The Sunset Ink is free to read, and most pages render without you signing in. An account is only needed when you want to save articles to a private library, organise saved items into reading groups, or follow specific authors.

What is the library and who can see it?

Your library is a private list of articles and columns you have saved to return to later. You can organise saved items into reading groups (each with its own colour) and search across them. No other user can see what you have saved or how you have organised it.

Can I read articles offline?

Not directly through the site - there is no offline mode in the current beta. You can use your browser's "save page" or reader-mode features to keep a personal offline copy. We may add an explicit offline-reading option in a later release.

Becoming an author

Can I pitch an article?

The author programme is currently invite-only while we tune the editorial process. We are not accepting open pitches at the moment, but you can write to us via the Contact tab with a short note about the work you would like to contribute - we keep a list and will reach out as the programme opens up.

How does the editorial process work?

Invited authors activate their account via a one-time code mailed to the invited address, draft articles or columns in the author portal, and submit them for editorial review. We respond with either a publish decision, light edits, or a "needs revision" note with specific feedback. The full lifecycle is documented in the Author Handbook on the authors subdomain.

Accounts & privacy

How do I delete my account?

From your profile page, choose Delete account. Deletion follows a 30-day grace period during which you can cancel, with the final two days locked to prevent last-minute reversal of a confirmed intent. At day 31, your account and personal data are permanently removed. See the Privacy Policy for the full procedure.

Will my email be shared with anyone?

No. We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. Your email is used only to send one-time sign-in codes, keep you signed in once you're authenticated, send essential account notices, and respond to messages you send us. The complete list of third-party services we use and what they receive is in the Privacy Policy.

Do you track me?

We do not run behavioural analytics, build interest profiles, or embed advertising or marketing trackers. The only cookies the site sets are strictly necessary for sign-in and a cookie-banner acknowledgement - full list and purposes are in the Cookie Policy.

Technical & support

Something is broken - how do I report it?

Use the Contact tab and pick Bug report from the subject dropdown. Please include the page URL, what you expected, what happened, and your browser / device if relevant. We acknowledge bug reports within a few business days.

Why am I being asked for a one-time code at sign-in?

Reader and author sign-in is passwordless - instead of storing a password, we mail you a six-digit one-time code at each cold sign-in. The code is sent to your registered email address and expires after a short window. If you do not receive it, check your spam folder and confirm the address is correct in your profile. (Google sign-in is the alternative, and skips the code step.)

Why does my outbound email come from @theonlinereader.com?

During beta, our email provider (Resend) is on a plan that supports a single verified sender domain, which is shared with our sister project. Once that plan is upgraded we will switch outbound mail to @thesunsetink.com. The content of those emails is from The Sunset Ink.
